Dr. Amy M. Alberton, PhD, MSW

Assistant Professor

Dr. Amy Alberton is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Texas State University. With a commitment to social justice, Dr. Alberton is dedicated to advocacy through research and service as well as preparing the next generation of social workers to create positive social change at the individual, family, community, and policy levels.

Dr. Alberton earned her PhD in Social Work from the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, where she focused her dissertation research on structural violence, including colonialism, and its impacts on Indigenous Peoples’ interfaces with police.

Before joining the faculty at Texas State University, Dr. Alberton worked in the field of mental health and addictions for more than 15 years in both non-profit and private practice settings. Her practice experience informs her teaching, as she emphasizes the importance of empathy, empowerment, and advocating for social justice in social work practice.

Dr. Alberton’s current research interests are focused on structural and interpersonal violence, and their intersection. Through her research, her goal is to work towards the elimination of systemic barriers faced by people who have been marginalized, especially Indigenous Peoples, through the development and implementation of anti-oppressive practices, programs, and policies. She is passionate about promoting social justice and positive social change across all her teaching, research, and service initiatives.
